What is blackout blinds
A power outage in the evening and at night causes a blackout, called by the English “blackout”. This phenomenon is reflected in the name of roller blinds.
For the first time, window curtain technology with opaque fabric was applied in Finland. In this way, the Finns provided a comfortable rest and sleep during the white nights. The invention has won demand thanks to the ability to damp or completely block natural light.
Today, blackout textile production is established in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and other countries.
What the canvas consists of
For the manufacture of the canvas, a three-layer non-woven fabric is used, capable of dimming the light. The outer layer is made of white fabric. Due to the light shade, sunlight is reflected and not allowed into the room.
Black material with a sealed structure is used to produce the intermediate gasket.
It retains heat well and scatters light penetrating through the surface layer. The inner layer is used for decoration. The front side of the curtains is facing the inside of the room.
Most blackout blinds are made from polyester. The dense structure of the synthetic material allows you to keep 100% of sunlight.
Natural fabrics do not possess such characteristics. Additional benefits include the absence of temporary deformations on the artificial canvas.
In the manufacture of opaque blackout roller blinds on a fabric basis, refractory polyvinyl chloride or acrylic fiber is used.
Manufacturing technology is based on the original weaving technique. Special threads are woven in a special way into the fabric structure.
In the manufacture of the canvas, 2 methods are practiced:
- A special light blocking compound is sprayed onto the fabric base with a thin layer. On the reverse side of the panel creates a decorative design. Matter made in this way has an increased density. The disadvantages include exposure to mechanical stress. The outer layer may be damaged, causing the stratification of the canvas.
- The basis of the weaving method is the interweaving of three threads with different textures. The external and internal sides of the material are formed by multi-colored fibers. The intermediate layer of black color detains light. The fabric obtained by the weaving method is characterized by elasticity, softness and a smooth surface. A disadvantage is the muffling of tones with a dark layer, which does not allow creating ornaments on the canvas.
Thanks to a special treatment, the blackout material does not burn, does not get dirty and does not deform under the influence of moisture.
Blackout Roller Blind Designs
Blackout blinds are installed on any type of window sash. Vertical guides do not allow sun curtains to sag and prevent the penetration of sunlight on the sides.
One of the elements of roller blinds is the shaft on which the upper part of the canvas is fixed. Winding fabric on it opens access to light. When unwinding, the room is darkened.
Design features of blackout blinds formed the basis for dividing into 2 categories:
- Open. The fabric roll does not hide under a special case. Opaque curtains of this type are in demand due to the low price and simplified installation procedure.
- Closed. The canvas is masked by a protective plastic box. The design and colors are selected in accordance with the design of the room.
Roller blinds of the second category are more difficult to install. Demand is explained by an organic combination with decorative elements.
Where are sun blinds used?
Windows facing the sunny side impede a relaxing holiday. On a clear day, the rays of the sun irritate the eyes with bright light. For such rooms, the best option is to use blackout instead of linen curtains. At night, they protect against street lighting, lamps and spotlights.
Lightproof blinds are installed in residential premises and public places.
Opaque curtains are widely used:
- In kindergartens. In darkened bedrooms, the quality of daytime sleep in children improves. The hypoallergenic properties of the material make it possible to mount roller shutters in a manger.
- In cinemas and schools. Darkness is required to display training materials and films.
- In greenhouses and photo labs. Roller blinds serve as a light filter.
Blackout systems are installed as standard blinds on the windows of kitchens and living rooms, cabinets and bedrooms, restaurants and cafes, libraries and shops, clubs and casinos.
Criterias of choice
When purchasing opaque curtains, they are guided by the following characteristics:
- The design is selected in accordance with the intended use. For complete darkness, cassette roller blinds with wide guides are suitable. For partial dimming, you can buy mini blinds that absorb up to 95% of sunlight.
- The material must have dust and moisture repellent properties. It is recommended to choose a PVC fabric with a specific coating.
- The color palette is selected in accordance with the design of the room. The color scheme must organically fit into the overall composition.
Blackout roller blinds with a pattern or original ornament on the front side serve as an additional decoration of the room. A non-standard solution is a special print with a photo on the canvas. The image should match the design of the room. Zoological or fabulous motifs with pictures of exotic animals or favorite characters are recognized as the best option when decorating window openings in children's bedrooms.
Installation methods for blackout roller blinds
The simplified design of the blinds, which do not allow light, allows you to install a blackout curtain on any window. Installation is easy to do.
Closed plastic blindbox is fixed with screws in the upper part of the window opening. The sash material does not matter. Blackout roller blinds are perfectly combined with both natural wood and artificial plastic.
Open sun blinds are mounted above the window. The shaft holding the web roll is fixed to the wall with double-sided tape.
For beginners, there are some difficulties in setting the differences in the roller shutter control system.
Lightproof blackout curtains rise and fall in two ways:
- mechanical, consisting in manually unwinding the web with a chain or an adjustment spring,
- automatic, involving the use of a device with an electric drive.
In most versions of electrically controlled blinds, the raising and lowering of the web are controlled by a remote control. This method is practiced when installing roller blinds in rooms with high ceilings. The complexity of installation requires the participation of a specialist.
You can install closed-type sun blinds yourself, following the detailed instructions:
- at the preparatory stage, it is necessary to degrease the surface of the window frame with a special tool containing alcohol,
- on the sash, markings are made at the end of the left and right rails,
- the canvas unfolds to full size,
- having previously removed the protective tape and having removed the side covers from the PVC box, the structure is fixed with one end on the upper section of the glazing bead,
- carefully moving the opposite side of the plastic body vertically along the sash, achieve a strictly horizontal orientation,
- the next step is to securely fix the safety box,
- after removing the protective film, the guide bars are fixed on the marked area,
- the side covers of the body made of polyvinyl chloride masking the canvas are returned to their original positions.
All parts required for installation are included in the factory equipment of blackout roller blinds. You can install with a minimal set of tools.
Lightproof blinds in the interior
A variety of options and a rich color palette of sun blinds can decorate any room, from the nursery or bedroom to the conference hall or restaurant.
Designers recognize compliance with the overall style of the room as the main requirement for window decoration with blackout roller blinds.
Plain fabrics and textile rolls of standard colors are sold in the finished version.
If you want to create an extraordinary design in a separate room, you can order fabric with an original pattern in the manufacturing company.
What style of interior will fit
Blackout blackout curtains combine with any decor. Rolled curtains organically fit into classic and oriental interiors. Such blinds are installed in rooms decorated in hi-tech or art deco style. Rolleta with canvases of calm discreet colors are suitable for minimalism.
How to choose the colors of blackout roller blinds
The color palette is selected in accordance with the purpose. In office rooms, it is recommended to decorate windows with blackout curtains of soft muted tones. The stimulation of the production process is facilitated by shutters with soothing motifs in green shades.
When choosing the colors and patterns of textiles are guided by the following criteria:
- dimming efficiency is determined by the density of the canvas,
- the fabric of rolled curtains with bright ornaments does not combine with standard fabric curtains,
- fabrics of saturated shades blocking light, close to daylight, light tones darken the room.
Combining black and white colors by analogy with a zebra, achieve an original effect. The alternation of horizontal stripes of different colors visually expands the space. Vertical lines increase the height of the ceiling.
How to care for blackout roller blinds
To preserve and increase the useful life of blackout roller blinds, several rules should be followed:
- due to the contact of the blinds with the windows, it is necessary to keep the glass clean, periodically removing settling dust,
- lightproof curtains should be protected from overheating and dampness, preventing the formation of dirt,
- despite the fact that the canvas does not crease, creases when tucking should be avoided, preventing damage to the mechanism,
- Before washing the window panes, it is necessary to roll up the curtain, lift the curtains and hide them in a protective box (for blinds of closed type),
- regular ventilation due to natural ventilation will help to rid rolleta of extraneous odors,
- preventive maintenance of the mechanism consists in periodic lubrication.
The fabric basis of blackout curtains is unpretentious in leaving. The following measures will allow for a long time to preserve the original appearance of opaque curtains with sun-protection effect:
- regular washing in delicate mode in an automatic machine at a temperature not exceeding 40 ° C,
- maximum revolutions of automatic extraction - 400,
- it’s not necessary to wring the cloth, as the synthetics dry quickly,
- due to the increased density, the blackout fabric does not need to be ironed, evened out when dried,
- in some cases it is allowed to iron the material of roller blinds.
Drying the textile backing of opaque blinds is recommended in a shaded room with good ventilation. Before drying, the synthetic fabric is carefully leveled and hung with its face inward.
Features and description of fabric
Blackout material appeared in Finland, in a country where the additional dimming of rooms is not a whim or decoration, but an integral element of a healthy and sound sleep. Literally from English “black out” and translates as “dim the light”, “darken”. The popularity of the Finnish product quickly grew, and over time, special fabric found application in all areas where it was required to muffle too bright a natural color. Today, in addition to the countries of the Scandinavian Peninsula, blackout production is everywhere.
The structure of blackout fabric is quite complex and contains three layers:
- The top (always white) is always located towards the glass and is a kind of light reflector,
- Medium is the base that gives shape
- Internal - its main function is decoration.
The following technologies are used in the manufacturing process:
- Three-layer blackout technology spraying is the most common today. In the process of creation, bright, bright materials are used, which contribute to the creation of all kinds of complex designs.
- Thick (dark) blackout - This is a woven fabric in which light is absorbed by tight tight weaves. Materials that are too dark (usually black threads) preclude the production of colored and light fabrics. As a rule, these products are made in dark colors.
The shelf life of a three-layer blackout is inferior to its denser, darker counterpart.
Reflective spraying is short-lived and requires careful handling, it is subject to scratches, peeling and other defects during washing. Dark fabric has more flexibility, it is quite soft to the touch. Its insignificant drawback is only a limited choice of the color of the product, however, this is made up for by the complex decor.

Benefits
Compared to traditional curtains, blackout fabric blinds have a lot of worthy advantages and differences, these are just the main ones:
- The main advantage of roller blinds is its almost 100% provision of blackout in the room, this is due to the peculiarity of the material from which they are made,
- Blackout curtains do not require regular washing and specialized care, unlike their traditional counterparts. They are quite simple to use. There are two control mechanisms: mechanical and automatic, the latter is very convenient for everyday use,
- The main material of the rolls is a synthetic fabric consisting of three layers. The second layer is the densest, it forms the basis, providing not only strength, but also heat and sound insulation, so you can forget about extraneous noise from the street,
- Roller blinds are practical. In the manufacturing process, blackout material is impregnated with a water- and dust-repellent solution, which allows the product to maintain its original quality for many years.
Where is best to use?
A few years ago there was a belief that roller blinds should be used exclusively in office interiors. It is proven that they are able to increase productivity due to the optimal level of illumination of the working room. However, today the demand for them has gone far beyond business and commercial centers. A variety of colors, decor and textures allows them to be harmoniously combined with any style, be it modern high-tech, beloved by everyone, Classics, oriental motifs or retro-gaining popularity. With any design choice, roller blinds will balance and decorate the interior.
The material from which blackout curtains are made has hypoallergenic properties.
Thus, they will become not only a wonderful decoration of a bedroom or a children's room, but also reduce the risk of allergies. Mini curtains will only emphasize a small window, and wide canvases will never seem bulky. A large selection of fabric blinds makes it possible to find them completely unusual application - from the creation of a home theater to protection from prying eyes of passers-by.

Thanks to what you can create a unique atmosphere in the house. For an accurate choice, it is necessary to know such parameters as the size of the window and glass itself, the height and width of the wings and the opening, the distance between the glass and the handles. Cassette
For cassette blinds, a special mount is used. This is a plastic box in which the curtains are rolled up. As a rule, they are made taking into account the color of the window frame, which makes them virtually invisible. In this form, less dust gets on the curtains, and the probability of their damage is minimal. Installation of cassette curtains is suitable for infrequent use in the room, they fit snugly against the glass and are good for windows with an inclined design. An ideal option in this case is considered a kitchen.
Mini roleta
The easiest way to install mini-blinds. The fastening is based only on Velcro and brackets, and special magnets can be used as an additional fixation to prevent sagging. As a rule, such curtains cover only glass.
It is customary to single out rolled blinds as a separate type, the popularity of which continues to gain momentum.
The design is as follows: lamellas or plates are connected together, forming a single canvas. Like roller blinds, blinds are presented on the market in large color and decorative solutions.
