Wooden ceiling in the apartment and the house, the pros and cons of what to make

In apartments of city houses and office premises, stretch ceilings look quite familiar. This finishing material gained great popularity due to the ease of installation and the richness of the color scheme. Such properties allow you to realize the most daring design decisions. Stretch ceilings in a private house, built of wood, began to install relatively recently. This is due to the operational features of such buildings.

Is it possible to make stretch ceilings in a wooden house

In wooden houses it is allowed to install tension structures, but when performing work it is important to observe the subtleties of the technological process. Installation is no different from installation in a city apartment. The complexity lies in the features of the operation of a structure made of wood.

Do not install a suspended ceiling in a recently built wooden house. Over time, as a result of shrinkage, the geometric dimensions of the wall and ceiling ceilings will change and waves will form on the panel.

To finish the ceiling can begin only after 1.5-2 years after completion of construction.

Materials made of a PVC film are cracked under the influence of negative temperatures, therefore PVC sheets cannot be installed in unheated buildings.

The harmful effect of dampness on fabric ceilings leads to the destruction of their color and loss of aesthetic appearance. In addition, moisture-absorbing material quickly molds, so this finish is not recommended in unfinished log cabins and unheated wooden structures. Equipping stretch ceilings, you should understand their pros and cons. Consider the main advantages and disadvantages.

Pros and cons of such a decision

The positive qualities include the following:

  • simplicity and speed of work
  • no need to align the ceiling surface,
  • security of the repaired building from water leaks from above,
  • ease of coating care
  • an incredible variety of colors and textures,
  • disguise ceiling defects and the ability to hide communications.

High-quality mounted tension coatings, with proper care, will last their owners more than 15 years without loss of performance. A perfectly smooth surface preserves the brightness of the colors, does not sag and does not crack over time.

The cons include:

  • the possibility of surface deformation in an unheated room,
  • the risk of condensed moisture vapor accumulating, mold coating and pathogenic microflora contamination of ceiling beams,
  • slight vibrations of the material when a draft occurs,
  • cuts with pointed objects make it impossible to repair the finish,
  • rodents can settle in the space between the ceiling and the tension web.

Observing the rules of operation and installation, you can avoid the manifestation of most of the negative qualities. This fact is confirmed by the practical experience of using tension structures by the owners of log houses.

The choice of canvas depending on the temperature

The canvas for suspended ceilings is made of polyvinyl chloride film or synthetic fabric. The choice of material largely depends on the temperature regime at which it will be operated.

PVC film is subject to thermal expansion and contraction, this circumstance adversely affects its performance. In addition, with a sharp decrease in temperature, the stretched fabric may crack to a state of unsuitability. As a result, further use will be impossible and will have to completely change the material.

The temperature mode of operation of the PVC sheet is in the range from +5 to + 50 ° C. As a result, it is advisable to use a polyvinyl chloride film for arranging a stretch ceiling only in year-round heated buildings.

Seasonal holiday homeowners should prefer the fabric. It is much less susceptible to thermal expansion and can be operated without loss of performance at temperature fluctuations from -50 to + 40 ° C. Therefore, in a country or village house, you can put only fabric stretch ceilings.

When installing the PVC film yourself, it is important to consider that the material requires heating to 70 ° C. To do this, you need a heat gun, which in inexperienced hands can damage the wooden ceiling. It is not required to heat the fabric ceiling during installation, it is easier to install it yourself.

How to make a stretch ceiling yourself

First of all, it is necessary to take into account the functional purpose of the room in which the stretch fabric will be used and to properly prepare. There are nuances of the work if the building is constructed of timber or has stove heating. Also, the technology is slightly different when installing a tensile structure on a ceiling with beams. In addition, it will be necessary to solve the problem of the occurrence of condensed vapors of moisture, which have a devastating effect on the wooden beams of the floor. Consider each situation in more detail.

Features of preparation

In general, the preparatory phase includes the following steps:

  1. Check integrity and, if necessary, repair roof leaks. Atmospheric moisture seeping through the roof will not break through the stretched fabric, but will require regular removal of water and drying of the material.
  2. Processing a draft ceiling with agents that prevent the development of pathogenic microflora, and flame retardants that prevent fire. After the installation is completed, these manipulations will not work.
  3. The destruction of rodents and insects. Otherwise, mice, cockroaches, ants and other living creatures will settle in the space between the panel and the ceiling. For this, all cavities should also be coated.
  4. Arrangement of high-quality ventilation to prevent decay of wood and the formation of mold, since the stretched fabric prevents the free movement of air masses.
  5. Drawing up a layout of the fixtures and laying electrical wiring.

If the house is made of timber

Installation of suspended ceilings in a timber house requires a high qualification of the performer of this work. If the building is made of profiled timber, there will be no problems. The difficulty of installation is the difficulty of attaching a flat profile to the rounded surface of the logs.

If you fix the baguette in the middle of the beam, then on the other hand at this level there will be a joint of logs. In addition, you will need to saw the profile at a difficult angle and glue the joints. To facilitate this work, an even substrate of lumber, for example, boards or OSB, is built around the perimeter of the room. The resulting gap will help close the installation of a wooden ceiling plinth.

If the house has a stove

If there is a furnace in the log house, the following actions will need to be performed:

  1. Arrange a plasterboard box around the chimney. The air gap between the chimney and the GCR protects the tension web from overheating and melting. Additionally, you can use a coaxial chimney. It has a double pipe design and less heat.
  2. Install a mortgage to secure the profile to drywall. On the inside of the GKL box, a bar is screwed to which a baguette for the stretch ceiling is subsequently attached. If this is not done, when the web is tensioned, the profile will vomit from drywall, since the fragile gypsum structure of the material is not designed for such loads.

The functioning of the stove is associated with the formation of smoke and soot, so the ceiling will have to be washed more often. Contaminants are easily removed from the surface of the stretched film with mild detergents dissolved in water. Do not use aggressive compounds including abrasive particles and acids for cleaning, as they can seriously damage the coating.

Solving condensation problems

To prevent the negative effects of moisture, the wood is impregnated with compounds that prevent the formation of mold and fungus. Since the PVC film does not allow air to pass through, natural or forced ventilation is provided. In diagonally opposite corners, grilles are mounted to reduce the pressure difference and thus prevent the accumulation of vapors. It is additionally recommended to install a ceiling exhaust fan.

In rooms with a high level of humidity, in the kitchen or bathroom, the installation of film ceilings has positive aspects. Moisture will settle on the surface of the canvas without penetrating the wood structure.

Installation technology

The main stages of installation of a stretch ceiling:

  1. Purification of wall and ceiling ceilings, surface treatment with protective agents.
  2. Determination of the location of lighting devices, installation of mortgages and summing up the electrical wiring.
  3. Marking and fastening profiles at a distance of about 10 cm from the draft ceiling. The baguette is screwed on with 6x50 wood screws or universal galvanized screws with a step of 10-15 cm.
  4. Warming up the room with a heat gun and web tension. The film is seasoned in a baguette starting from the corners and gradually moving to the center. Fabric ceilings do not require heating and are stretched from the middle of the walls to the corners, at the end of the work, the remains of the fabric are cut with a knife.
  5. Installation of lighting devices. In the places of installation of spotlights, special thermal rings are glued to the canvas, protecting the film from tearing and overheating. Further, a hole is cut out inside the tread ring and a lighting fixture is attached to the mortgage.
  6. Sealing butt joints. The places where the baguettes fit on the wall are closed with a decorative tape masking the mounting joints.

Features of installation in a house with beams

If the design project provides for the external location of the beams, the installation of the stretch fabric has some features. There are two ways to make wooden bars on the outside of the finish:

  1. The canvas is pulled onto pre-installed base beams. Top mounted decorative false beams.
  2. The material of the stretch ceiling is fixed between the beams. To do this, it is divided into fragments of the desired configuration.

Performing the first method is much simpler, but if the ceilings are low, it is not recommended to use it, since the useful area of the space decreases. The second method is more complicated in execution, but can be used in any room.

What to consider at the construction stage

When planning the installation of tension structures in a wooden house, it is recommended to provide all the nuances of subsequent operation at the construction stage:

  • The height of the ceilings is selected taking into account the features of the decorative coating.
  • Roof waterproofing is carefully carried out to prevent atmospheric moisture from seeping out.
  • To prevent mold and mildew, ventilation is provided. Additionally, the wood is impregnated with compounds that impede the development of pathogenic microflora and fire.
  • To prevent the rodents from settling, the cracks in the draft ceiling are carefully sealed and devices for repelling them are installed.
  • Measures are taken to prevent the building mud from shedding from the rough floor, otherwise, after the film is tensioned, debris will fall on the canvas. To remove it, you have to dismantle the ceiling.
  • At the construction stage, a thermal frame is immediately arranged around the chimney pipes from the fireplace or stove.

In conclusion, it can be noted that relatively recently appeared on the modern construction market stretch ceilings are gaining increasing popularity as a finishing material. The advantage is due to the high performance of the decorative coating, its long service life, resistance to moisture and ease of surface care. Like any building material, tension structures have arguments for and against, but there are significantly more advantages than disadvantages.

Wooden ceiling in the apartment and the house, the pros and cons

Consider the issue of the wooden ceiling in the apartment, the pros and cons.

To the benefits This performance of the ceilings in the apartment include:

• Good air permeability, insulation, strength and environmental safety.
• Attractive and original appearance. Wood paneling makes the room comfortable and stylish, comparing favorably in this regard with faceless painted ceilings.
• The ability to hide heat and sound insulating materials, ventilation ducts, lamp bases, protective ducts for electrical wiring and other communications.
• Simplicity of installation and painting operations.
• A variety of options for arrangement and decoration. Wooden ceilings can be solid, slatted, coffered, decorated with beams and glass inserts. Their surfaces are covered with transparent or tinting coatings, as well as opaque paints with any color and degree of gloss.
A properly equipped wooden ceiling will last at least 15 years with the renewal of antiseptic protection and paintwork every 5-7 years.

Attention! My personal opinion is that a wooden ceiling, especially in a house, is a solution that will allow your interior to age beautifully, that is exactly what all the right designers achieve, so that your interior grows old nobly over time.

Cons of wooden ceilings manifest in:

• High costs for sawn timber from valuable species of wood and means for decorating and protecting them.
• Reducing the height of the walls by at least 5 cm, the risks of visual reduction of space.
• Increased protection against moisture, biological hazards and fire.
• Low compatibility with a number of modern apartment design styles.

The last limitation is eliminated with the correct selection of the type and color of the wooden ceiling. So, the problem of visual reduction of space is solved by partially finishing the ceiling or by switching the lining from wood to walls, using light wood or painting it in white.

But in general, this method of decoration is more appropriate when arranging an apartment in the style of eco, chalet, Provence, country, Japanese and Scandinavian interiors than for hi-tech or modern.

What to make a wooden ceiling in living quarters

In conditions of normal humidity, the choice of materials is limited only by considerations of decorativeness, ease of installation and budget. Optimum results are achieved when finishing ceilings:

• Standard (12-25 mm in thickness, 150 in width, with spikes up to 5 mm) and euro-lining (12.5 mm, up to 96 mm in width, with a deeper tongue-and-groove connection), mounted in one layer in any direction. This group is represented by materials "C", "B", "A" and extra quality class used in dry residential premises without any restrictions.
• Grooved or parquet flooring with a thickness of not more than 25 mm.
• Block house - rounded varieties of lining, mainly chosen when arranging the premises of an apartment in eco-styles.
• Special ceiling panels made of solid wood.

Advice! It is best to use calm lining for the ceiling with a limited budget.

Alternative solid profiled materials are ordinary unedged boards (subject to removal of the bark or surface treatment), due to cracks being packed in 2 layers, sanded or laminated plywood, combined with wooden fillets or patterned elements, panels based on wood chips or wood shavings with veneer coatings , wooden wallpaper.

At the request of the owners, the wooden ceilings in the apartment are decorated with thick beams or false beams.

The length of molded materials is selected based on the size of the room and the selected installation scheme. Due to the limited space in the apartment, it is not recommended to buy excessively long products, but solid stripes on the ceiling look more stylish and beautiful. As a rule, a lining, board or planken is purchased with a stock of 30 cm or delivered in sawn form.

What to make a wooden ceiling in wet rooms

Unlike dry and well-lit living rooms in rooms with high humidity, it makes no sense to use both extra-class wood (the number of knots or similar defects is not so important as the quality of processing edges, grooves or spikes), as well as low-cost lumber from the outer layers of blanks .

Corresponding products made of red core have suitable characteristics. Canadian cedar (thuja), larch or alder.

A budget but not ideal alternative is lining from the massif of linden (not darkening, but prone to sagging) or aspen (silvering over time without rotting or warping).

The use of darkening oak, beech, ash or loose pine in wet areas is better to refuse.

In addition to the type of wood and the quality of processing, when choosing lumber for the bathroom, attention is paid to their moisture level. The use of materials dried in natural conditions is fraught with warping of the ceiling in the first months of service.

The best indicators of moisture resistance are lining that meets European standards DIN 68126/86 with a moisture content of not more than 8-12%, parquet board and plank.

According to the terms of the technology, these materials are used in combination with waxes, pastes and waterproof varnishes.

Advice! It is best to use larch materials for ceilings in bathrooms and toilets.

The technology of installing wooden ceilings in the apartment

Work begins with the preparation of a layout of the lining or its analogues (transverse, longitudinal or diagonal, depending on the area of the room) and the calculation of the material. Conventionally, the entire installation process is divided into separate stages:

• Surface preparation (removal of old materials, sealing cracks, roughing, priming).
• Marking the mounting points of the frame and the preparation of its elements.
• Fastening the frame from the profile and battens to the base.
• Inspection, cutting and fixing of lamellas.
• Finishing corners and joints, mounting fixtures and skirting boards.

Frame mounting

This stage is considered difficult due to the need to install the most even, strong and lightweight frame at the same time. Most often, this design is assembled from battens and beams with a cross section of 20 × 40 mm according to the following scheme:

1. On walls adjacent to the ceiling, a mark on the bypass bar is marked with a hydraulic or laser level.
2. All wooden elements of the frame are sawn into pieces of the right size, soaked in antiseptics and flame retardants and dried well. Holes of small (5-5.5 mm) diameter are drilled in the bypass bar in increments of not more than 30 cm.
3. The bar is fixed to the walls with dowels around the entire perimeter of the room.
4. Cross strips are installed with a step of 45-60 cm, no more, perpendicular to future lamellas and are attached to the bypass rail and ceiling using self-tapping screws and special suspensions.

At all stages checked evenness of the assembled frame, if necessary, alignment under the slats laid pieces of dense rubber or thin blocks.

Wooden ceilings in the apartment as a rule, they do not need to be insulated (only the last floors are an exception), but if desired, after mounting the frame, soundproof materials such as acoustic mineral wool plates, corks or foamed roll coverings are hidden under them.

Most of them need steam protection.provided by breathable films. During installation, the membranes are protected from damage, the laying side and the recommended ventilation gap are specified in the manufacturer's instructions.

After installing the frame and before it is sewn, electric wires are laid inside and fastened. Given the high combustibility of wood, all wires are connected without twists and closed with a protective corrugation.

To the skin of the frame lamellas begin after checking the performance of the fixtures and turning off the electricity.

Topcoat Installation

Wooden lamellas are sawn according to the need for a compensation gap of 15-20 mm around the perimeter of the walls, undergo antiseptic treatment and, if necessary, are painted or varnished. The last sub-step is considered mandatory for the installation of lumber with a tongue-and-groove joint system in rooms with high humidity and is skipped with sufficient quality lumber used in ordinary rooms.

The installation of the casing is carried out in two ways:

• Explicit, with screwing the lining to the frame crate with screws. With all the advantages (simplicity and high speed of work, low cost of fasteners), this method is rarely chosen due to a decrease in the aesthetics of coatings. In the absence of other possibilities, they try to place fastenings in inconspicuous places or randomly. Self-tapping screws are screwed without excessive pressure, with the head being sunk in the wood.

• Concealed, using special nails driven into corners or kleimers. When choosing this method, only the first board is screwed with screws, followed by hiding the fasteners with a ceiling baseboard. When working with nails or self-tapping screws, the lining spikes are directed from the wall, when installing the sheathing on the kleimers, vice versa. The last type of fasteners is considered the most convenient, the ceiling assembled with their help looks beautiful and can be quickly disassembled if desired.

Ceiling painting

The wooden ceiling in the apartment is better to paint. These works are carried out in order to extend the life of wooden ceilings by improving their resistance to moisture, burnout and similar negative effects. For internal protection and decoration of natural wood coatings are used:

• Glaze and coating antiseptics, emphasizing the beauty of wood materials without hiding their texture.
• Colorless, tinted and glossy azure based on natural oils. It is recommended to choose these products with high requirements for aesthetics of coatings and when working with valuable wood species.
• Transparent and colored varnishes: water-based acrylic, alkyd to create moisture and wear-resistant coatings with a flicker effect, polyurethane to protect wood from burnout and yellowing, two-component varieties with optimal adhesion and resistance to external influences.
• Stains, used when it is necessary to strengthen or change the shade of tree species and requiring additional coating with varnish or transparent varnishes.
• Acrylic, acrylate, silicate, silicone or polyurethane-based opaque coatings for indoor use.
• Specialized products with wax or chalk additives to achieve a whitewashed wood effect.

These materials are applied to the ceiling in 2-3 layers after surface preparation. At this stage, the coatings are cleaned of old coatings or putty (if necessary), sanded with skins with a gradual reduction in grain size and dust free.

Next ActionsI depend on the type of topcoat: when applied to the ceiling, the surfaces are pre-impregnated with adhesive primers, when varnished - they are coated with stain, antiseptics or azure. Application conditions (operating temperature range, drying time, flow rate) and compatibility of the compositions used are specified in advance, ideally, materials from one manufacturer are used for the preparation and painting of the wooden ceiling.

For applying paintwork on the ceiling, brushes are used. (ideal when working with lining), rollers (without tearing the drum off the surface, with an overlap of each adjacent strip) or spray gun. The latter is selected for large volumes of work and requires certain skills. All types of coatings are applied evenly and without drips, the quality of work is checked using a lamp.

Advice! It is best to paint the finish before installation, so that when the shrinks dry, the gaps remain stained.

Final recommendations

In conclusion, it is worth notingthat properly assembled and painted ceilings do not need complicated maintenance. To preserve the decorative properties and extend the service life, it is enough to periodically wipe them with microfiber or pieces of soft textile soaked in polishes.

Abrasive materials and aggressive detergents funds for these purposes cannot be used. In addition to cleaning, wooden ceilings are periodically inspected to check the condition of structures and surfaces, detected defects (warping rows, crevices, peeling paint, the appearance of lesions with fungus) are immediately eliminated.

Now you know the answer to the request: the wooden ceiling in the apartment, the pros and cons of which is better to make, the installation and painting technology.

Advantages and disadvantages

First, consider the advantages of the material itself and the ceilings from it. They are obvious:

  • natural material whose aroma has a beneficial effect on health,
  • excellent heat and sound insulation, wooden surfaces “breathe”, normalizing humidity in the room,
  • the wooden ceiling can be varnished, stained or painted, giving the desired shade,
  • ease of installation with nails or self-tapping screws,
  • wooden coverings add comfort to the room.

But there are also disadvantages:

  • difficulty in care (requires regular antiseptic treatment from rot and mold),
  • flammable material (requires the use of a special means of ignition),
  • high price of natural finishing material,
  • a wooden ceiling reduces the height of the room, so you should not use this type of decoration in low rooms.

Finish options

Installation of a wooden ceiling in the interior can be done with exposed beams or without them. Since wealthy people often choose natural finishing materials for decorating suburban villas, today finishing with expensive wooden beams is a peculiar sign of luxury. Beams can be both supporting structures, and be their imitation.

If the beams are a full-fledged supporting structure, they fulfill, first of all, a practical and functional role. Imitation is no less popular when the beams act exclusively as decor. For this, conifers with a delicate pattern are usually used or beams are imitated using painted polyurethane and polystyrene.

There are other options for finishing the wooden ceiling, which can bring real cosiness and a homely atmosphere to the room.

  • Can be used lining trim which is affordable and at the same time conveys the effect of natural wood.
  • Another popular option is rack ceiling. The ceiling rail is actually a “lining under the beam”, which is wider than a conventional lining (13-20 cm) and has a length of 3 to 6 meters. Such a wooden surface resists mechanical damage and temperature changes. At the same time, do not refuse to use special impregnations to protect the ceiling from moisture.

There is a division of lumber for ceiling decoration into classes:

  • extra is a smooth board without knots using expensive tree species (oak, red, cedar),
  • Class A and B materials have minor defects,
  • Class C includes low-priced wood with bumps or knots encountered.

Pay attention to the fact that it is better not to use expensive extra-class wood in humid rooms, but it is ideal for a living room. Of the particularly complex elements on the ceiling, wooden caissons from a solid array can be noted.

There is a more unpretentious, but unnatural version of wood imitation. If you choose the right lighting, such artificial panels can not be distinguished from a real wooden coating. As an imitation, you can use MDF panels, which very realistically copy the natural texture of wood, while the price will be much cheaper than the original. Installation of such panels is easier, since MDF weighs much less than wood.

To paint or not?

After installing wooden ceilings and treating them with protective compounds, a logical question arises about further painting. The tree does not mix well with oil coatings, besides, it has a number of advantages precisely when it is not painted, for example, it can absorb excess moisture from the air or, conversely, fill it with natural aromas when it comes to coniferous and resinous tree species.

The ceiling should be painted only if frequent changes in temperature and humidity occur in the room, as a result of which the boards may crack. It turns out that the paint layer is able to protect them from deformation.

Also, instead of paint, you can use the following protective transparent varnishes:

  • polyurethane for the prevention of yellowing,
  • alkyd, forming a waterproof film,
  • Acrylic-polyurethane, protecting from negative environmental influences.

The tone and color of such designs may also be different. For example, a tree looks great in combination with white walls, textured paint for walls is also suitable.

An interesting fact is that designers use the ability of wooden surfaces to scatter light, so the effect of natural shading is created when decorating a room with a wooden ceiling.

Styles

If there is a task to make the space more voluminous and wider, you can use white painted walls and ceiling in wood in the interior. And in these interior styles, designers most often use wooden ceilings:

  • high tech (pronounced geometry of objects and clear boundaries of wooden boards on the ceiling fit perfectly into this style),
  • country and provence (it is simply impossible to imagine these "rustic" styles without the use of natural materials and a wooden ceiling),
  • modern (this style combines natural and artificial materials, most importantly, do not violate the overall harmony),

  • chalet (dark shades of wood prevail here, for example, burgundy and chocolate),
  • eco style (provides for the use of exclusively harmless materials in the decoration, while the wood texture should be clearly visible, the style is also characterized by spacious rooms, high ceilings and good lighting),
  • Japanese style (the main materials in the decoration are stone and wood in dark shades).

Examples in the interior

A wooden ceiling is not at all a “legacy of the past”, but a fashionable trend in the interior. Designers often use imitation when the beams are not load-bearing and perform an exclusively decorative function.

Wooden ceilings in the interior of a modern apartment look very impressive. Wood ceiling decoration will be appropriate in almost any style.

The white ceiling from the lining will visually increase the space.

Pros and Cons of Wood Ceilings

Constructions from natural materials always have many advantages. Among the advantages of wooden are the following:

  • Good heat and sound insulation properties.
  • The ability to regulate the indoor climate, pick up excess moisture from the air and give it away as needed.
  • Safety for living organisms. With some types of processing of raw materials, even a special beneficial effect on health is possible.
  • Wood is quite simple to process and install.
  • Wooden structures are very beautiful, fit into a variety of interior styles.

When choosing such ceilings, remember their shortcomings. The height of the room will noticeably decrease, this is due to the specifics of the installation of the system. The tree is highly flammable and does not tolerate moisture, so it must be treated with special compounds. The material needs special care, at least regular treatment with protective solutions. And one more minus - the high cost of wood ceilings.

Features of the arrangement of wooden ceilings

For installation in the apartment, two main types of construction can be used: with open or closed beams. You can choose any, but it is worth considering the height of the ceiling, which is usually small in apartments. Beams can play the role of a supporting structure or only imitate it. Coniferous elements with an interesting natural pattern look good as beams, but it is also possible to use colored foam or polyurethane.

To design a wooden ceiling, slats, narrow or wide, plates, caissons, etc. can be used. The choice depends on what result you plan to get. It is extremely undesirable to choose massive details for a decor. Their thickness should not exceed 2.5 cm. It is important that a special treatment is present. It is advisable to choose boards cut from the edge of the trunk, they will last longer. For wet rooms, on the contrary, elements made of a core are selected.

Facing plates

For their production, wood is used, including from valuable species. The material is processed, painted, varnished, etc. A special kind of such plates is impregnated with wax, which allows them to be installed even in rooms with high humidity. Plates are easy to install, caring for them is also easy. The main disadvantage of the material is its high cost.

Decorative panels

They are made by pressing several layers of wood. The outer side of such a panel is usually made of valuable species. For the inner layers choose inexpensive coniferous wood. The panels are beautiful, durable, easy to install and maintain. Their cost is lower than that of stoves, but also significant.

Lining of different types

Budget option for cladding a wooden ceiling. Represents the grooved planed boards from various breeds of a tree. Most often it is a pine, larch or oak. Thanks to the castle system, the lining is very easy to install. The constructions assembled from it are durable and reliable. The material differs in the width of the panels, due to which a different decorative effect is obtained.

In addition to flat lining, a so-called block house is also produced, which has the appearance of a semicircular log. Most often it is used for exterior decoration, but can also be used in the decoration of the ceiling. Lining has a class, this must be considered when choosing:

  1. Extra. Boards without the slightest defects, complete absence of knots. As flat and smooth as possible. It is made from various species, including valuable: red, cedar, oak.
  2. Classes A and B. Small defects and knots are allowed. Defects somewhat spoil the appearance, but do not affect durability and strength.
  3. Class C. Planks with knots or bumps. Made of inexpensive wood. The most budget option.

Cons of rack design

Like any product, the wooden ceiling of the slats also has several very significant drawbacks:

  • due to the use of the frame, the height of the room suffers,
  • natural wood does not tolerate high humidity, structural elements can be deformed. The use of a special substance that impregnates the panels helps to get rid of this problem.
  • wooden structures ignite easily and quickly. However, progress does not stand still, and ceilings with a high degree of fire safety already exist. They do not light up and prevent the spread of flame in the room. In such designs, bars of unique fireproof materials are used, which act as a “flap” for fire,
  • fungi and mold may form on the wood ceiling with high humidity. To avoid such a misfortune, the panels are treated with a special substance.

Variants of rack ceiling design

It is possible to create not only beautiful, but also a unique coating thanks to various variations on the design design:

  • continuous ceiling provides no gaps between the rails,
  • the surface is formed with gaps between the panels,
  • design with decorative inserts that are used to mask the space between the rails.
